Tomorrow Thursday, May 31st come out and support the Andy Kessler Foundation Benefit Art Auction. The mission of the Andy Kessler Foundation is to provide community outreach to people in need through art, music, skateboarding and surfing. The Foundation supports the development and improvement of New York skate parks, sponsors scholarships to action sports camps, and participates in related artistic and athletic workshops.

Among the high caliber artists donating their work for auction are Swoon and our boys Mosco, Curtis Kulig, Doze Green, and David Ellis.

Earlier this month, we had the honor of hosting our 5deGallo party with the infamous @ChingoBling. The party was tight and we couldn’t keep our eyes off our MC. We got caught up in his star persona. At the end of the night, we broke bread over a New York slice and got to see a humble apparition with real talk. He sent us his new cumbia crunk single, CLAP, so we cornered him to ask him… “What is up and when you coming back?”

You’ve seemed to lay off the ranchero vibe, why the change?
The ranchero will always be a part of me, but it gets misinterpreted. It’s such a crazy image that sometimes people dont know how to take it. I’m all about confusing people so thats a part of my performance art. I like to provoke thought and at times anger people. Right now however I want to make sure that people can separate the Chingo super hero persona from the guy behind the character.

Tell us what inspired cumbia crunk?

Houston is a melting pot of sounds and flavors. We have a lot of bounce influence and Latin as well. OG Bobby Trill did a great job with the remix to CLAP. Acordians with the808s…they just go together! Im thinking about dropping a whole 6 track EP with that vibe.

You just fell in love with BK, tell us why?

Brooklyn has a diverse vibe, that is equal parts: O.D.B., hipster, and orthodox Jew. Everything cool you want in a city is all in one borough. It is a strong brand as well. I saw everything from Brooklyn clothing (Brooklyn Industries), beer (Brooklyn Brewery) and even saw a bottle of red stuff made by the Brooklyn Salsa Company. Hell, it’s the only burrough worthy of Jay-Z’s Brooklyn Nets. Some of my friends from high school live there and showed me around. It turns out they live a few blocks away from Geko Jones. We did a lot of walking. Its the New York way.

New York is becoming more Mexican. What can Chingo bring to the scene?

Yes I noticed things were a little bit more Mexican this go round. I attended prep school in Jersey and no one believed I was Mexican because I wasn’t “dark enough” or “short enough.” It seems like we’re really getting involved in business and in the community. I never imagined a ”Mexican New York”. NYC has people from all over but it was crazy at the party when I would shout out different countries and “VIVA MEXICO CABRONES!” got the biggest response. What can Chingo bring? I think I can bring a hell of a fiesta. I want to be the New York poster child for a Mexican Fiesta! Thats mainly what I aim to do wherever i go. Maybe a Chingo plate at one of the taquerias? I really would like to come back this summer and enjoy the scene. Experience A New York summer and see how y’all really get down.

You just performed at our 5deGallo event, how was that party different from others?

The women to guys ratio, it was like four girls to one guy. Me like! Uproot Andy, Geko Jones, and Sonora had them going! Dancing till 4am, I was running on fumes by 3 am. Clubs close at 2 am in most of the country and I guess all the traveling was catching up to me. So I apologize to anyone who met me after 3 am! It was a great event and I’ve been bragging to everybody “that’s how you throw a party!” Cinco de Mayo
is a busy week for a lot of us Mexican-American entertainers, and I’m really glad that I ended up at y’alls party this year.

How did you keep it Mex in New York City?

I ate at La Superior in BK, and I conducted a tamale wrapping class at Geko Jones house in BK. It was like Food Network meets the roast of Charlie Sheen. Or something like that.

Your music maintains a strong sense of personal politics, what is important to you right now?

Right now my campaign is all positive, my message is “Celebrate Life And Party” or C.L.A.P. I think alot of the issues we have as a community can be solved by getting out and celebrating with people of other cultures. A beer, good music, and a conversation can do wonders for race relations! Tequila solves it all in my book! Instead of protesting and complaining, I would like to contribute to ”la causa” by making an impact in pop culture. An impact in pop culture via film, comedy, music, etc. So that I can contribute to the ”face of the new Mexican-American.” Hispanic 2.0 is the term I’ve heard a few times from the marketing types. Basically companies are starting to understand how we tick. That our tastes vary, we would attend a festival that has Snoop Dogg, Chingo Bling, Katy Perry, and Ramon Ayala or something.
